Online Dating – How Long Before You Should Meet

Taking the leap from online chatting to a first date can be a tricky stage in the online dating process. It is not uncommon for users of internet dating websites to be serial chatters who have little interest in actually meeting the object of their attention. So how do you know when the time is right to suggest a date with the person you have been talking to for a while?

This is a difficult question as it very much depends on how long it takes you to feel comfortable with the person you are chatting with and how keen you are to meet them!

A general rule of thumb with online dating is to allow at least a week of messages/emails/IM conversations before arranging a date. This gives you the best possible chance of getting to know the person before committing to spending a few hours in their company. And if your judgement is not always great, allow at least two weeks so you can find out more about them.

If you prefer to stick to the accepted protocol, it is normally customary for the man to pop the date question. Men generally prefer to do the chasing and quite often get upset if the woman comes across as too assertive. On the other hand, if you are an assertive woman, there is little point in trying to pretend you are the shy and retiring type, so be yourself and pop the question!

Be wary of the person who appears so smitten they want to meet you after only a couple of conversations. Be even more wary if the subject of sex has reared its ugly head already. Anyone who is genuinely looking for more than a quick roll in the sack will be happy to spend time finding out more about you before hassling you for a date.

Sometimes weeks can pass and despite all of your most unsubtle hints, there is no sign of any date. If this sounds like your current situation, try popping the date question and see what happens. Should the other person suddenly go suspiciously quiet, you can probably assume they are only looking for a cyber pal, but if they immediately agree to meet you, they were probably just scared you might say no to a date. Either way, you know where you stand!

There is no great secret to deciding how long before you meet in online dating. Use your judgement and treat each case as a unique one. But don’t leave it too long or you might find your potential date loses interest and moves on to the next prospect!
